In memoriam: Nikola Marković (1939–2026)
We are saddened by the passing of Nikola Marković, one of the people who laid the foundations of the information society in Serbia and Yugoslavia.
Throughout his decades-long career, he dedicated his work to the development of public information systems, the advancement of digital government, and the promotion of knowledge as a public good. He believed that technology should serve society and that broad access to information is one of the essential preconditions for democratic development.
Nikola Marković belonged to a generation that understood digital technologies as public infrastructure, and digitalization as a means of strengthening institutions, expanding knowledge, and improving the everyday lives of citizens. He also maintained that technological progress carries responsibility, and that the development of the digital society must remain guided by the public interest.
Eight years ago, we had the privilege of speaking with him for our documentary television series In the Net. Today, that conversation has taken on an even greater significance. It preserves the memory of one of the pioneers of Yugoslav and Serbian computing, as well as an approach to technology that remains just as relevant today – one grounded in openness, cooperation, curiosity, and a deep conviction that digital development should serve society, not the other way around.
We will remember Nikola Marković not only for his exceptional professional contribution, but also for his generosity in sharing his knowledge and his commitment to passing on the ethos of the pioneers of the information society to new generations.
We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
